, if mitt romney's to become president, let's see if the poll numbers in that state of ohio which we're going to see as this week proceeds, let's see if those numbers have tightened there because that's going to be a key number for us. >> it certainly must be a huge wake-up call for the obama campaign, these pew research poll numbers that have just come out. >> yeah. >> so what do they do now? they've got a vice presidential debate coming up thursday night. >> they've got to have a couple of good presidential debates and they all believe that the president can do it and clearly the president himself understands that he didn't perform the way he would have hoped in the first debate. i do think that this puts a little bit of pressure on joe biden to perform well. having talked to my sources in the biden camp, they say they're sticking with their game plan, that is to draw contrast with paul ryan. that they intend to do that. that they intend to talk about foreign policy as well as domestic policy. and that they want to continue to draw the contrasts with the romney campaign because the
campaign events. mitt romney's been sort of taking a victory lap through center battleground states and talk about how well he did in last week's debate against president obama. they also believe this is the result of undecided voters who are giving the former massachusetts governor a new look. and they also say that they are still working hard to bring home what they call persuadable voters. you can see that in the polling, one week president obama's up. now mitt romney is up. so there is, they think, a chunk of voters who can be turned one way or the other. but let's right now take a listen to what mitt romney is saying right now. he's going through a standard part of a stump speech on whaild what he would do to produce more domestic energy in this country. >> crack down on china if and when they cheat. number three, i'm going to make sure the training programs work for the workers today. we get our kids the education they need. i'm going to make sure that our parents and our kids and the teachers, they come first and the teachers union will have to come behind. number four, i wil
the -- yet that seems to be a case strongly democratic state still. >> i remember covering romney earlier this year in places like lorraine where he wanted to build the narrative that the good west was struggling and that he could help it out much better than the president. the problem is you have an ambitious and aggressive governor john kasich already. he painted the narrative that jobs are being created again in ohio and companies are coming back. after super tuesday, the romney camp changed their strategy. no longer recovery. john kasich jump on board and we have seen little discussion about some of the worst conditions in the state. it's been a troubling narrative and a challenging one for the romney camp to try to get on board. it's the economy good? host: it's important to remember in ohio, people associate the american auto industry. industry. much of northern ohio is dependent upon the success of the auto industry, which is why 's statementney h about letting detroit go bankrupt and has had ramifications for ohio as well. host: let's go to mark joining us from ohio. a democrat. c

of state polls showed romney doing pretty well in the battleground states. in the rasmussen polls over the last two days, obama is doing better. that's consistent with the trend i talked about earlier. the question is whether obama gets an outsized bounce in states like ohio, nevada and iowa where he was doing better than nationally. if you look at all of the national polls conducted since the first debate, what you see is about a three point gain for romney. if that holds and if that uniformly filtering down to the battleground states, romney would still trail in iowa, ohio and alabama and obama would have a slight advantage ♪ electoral college. >> continuing our theme of what really matters, let's talk about the polls. obviously, polls don't vote. but do they sway the electorate? do they see one person as leading or gaining and some people decide to change their vote? is there some science on do polls actually shape the election itself? >> i don't think there's very much evidence that polls shift the election. if they did, i think we would see, you know, a clearer sign of that. wha

. the sunshine state is a must-have for republicans to recapture the white house. today romney called any increase in the federal deficit immoral and promised to cut and cap federal spending spending and pe country on track to a balanced budget. >> you don't have to wait until november to vote. early voting in california starts tomorrow. by law vote by mail begins 29 days before the election and that's monday. you can also go to your county elections office and cast a ballot. >> all voters who applied to vote by mail will get their ballot. election officials are starting to prepare those to go out. they'll start going out on tuesday when post offices return from the holiday. >> ama: monday is columbus day, which means some county election offices will be closed. so check before you go october 22nd is the deadline to register to vote. >> looks like there's some changes in the weather, leigh. >> a few more clouds moving in, tuesday and wednesday, and some parts of the bay area maybe a struggle -- sprinkle or two or nothing at all. but we'll show you what could come in. the live shot from th

those sacrifices for a foreign policy that mitt romney may or may not propose? >> joel, from your state perspective, karen talking about words do matter srks that a big part of today's foreign policy address, avoiding land mines, pitfalls in his wording? >> words do matter and the international community is confused by governor romney and the foreign policy. the shifting back and forth on issues such as libya, to egypt. very confusing for foreign leaders to gauge where he is and the american people also will want to hear about veterans in this speech unlike the republican convention and understand where will the $2 trillion in extra defense spending come from? >> general, isn't that a big distinction, too? because what's being done for our vets comes from a different budget than what's spent for defense. >> well, i think there's normally a view to support the veterans administration, secretary shinseki's concerns of ptsd and reintegrating the afghanistan and iraq veterans. the big question for romney is upping naval ship construction dramatically, restoring the cuts proposed by the obam
